Just like its namesake, the capital of ancient Egypt, Memphis sits on a mighty river that serves as the lifeblood of the city. The Mississippi River has carried people and products to and from Memphis for as long as folks have called the area home. Its prime position on the water established Memphis as a center of trade and transportation since its founding in the 19th century, and it continues as such to this day. The Memphis International Airport is the “SuperHub,” the very heart of FedEx shipping. The airport is the second busiest cargo airport in the world (after Hong Kong). The single biggest attraction in Memphis is Graceland, the former home of rock n’ roll icon Elvis Presley. Featuring two of Presley’s private planes, his collection of cars and motorcycles, and other assorted Elvis memorabilia, the musical mecca draws over 600,000 sightseers each year. The only house in the United States that attracts more visitors is the White House. Elvis was only one of many, many musicians born, discovered, or living in Memphis. Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, and (more recently) Justin Timberlake are just a sample of the immense musical talent fairly pouring from the city. The Memphis Walk of Fame pays homage exclusively to Memphian musicians, singers, composers, and writers. Memphis culture extends even beyond music. For example, MovieMaker Magazine recognized the Indie Memphis Film Festival as one of the 25 “Coolest Film Festivals” and one of 25 “Festivals Worth the Entry Fee.” Memphis in May, a month-long celebration of Memphis heritage, includes the Beal Street Music Festival, International Week, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest (the world’s largest pork barbecue contest), and the Sunset Symphony.
