Toledo, Ohio sits at the western end of Lake Erie, borders the state of Michigan, and has a population of over 287 thousand people. It was founded by United States citizens in 1833, and was originally incorporated as part of Michigan territory, but after the end of the Toledo War, in 1837, it was re-founded and was incorporated into Ohio. It started as an important port city, with its access to the great lakes, but with the invention of the automobile, and the start of the industrial revolution, they became known for industrial manufacturing. Big car companies like General Motors and Chrysler had factories in Toledo, but in recent years many of these companies have left the area, or have not had as many jobs, reducing the areas foothold in the industry. Separate from cars though, they have long been known as ‘glass city’ for their long history in glass manufacturing. If you visit the Toledo Museum of Art, you can see a lot of these glass creations. After visiting the Toledo Museum of art you have to stop by the National Museum of the Great Lakes. It is located on the banks of the Maumee River, on the east side of the city, and is operated by the Great Lakes Historical Society. It celebrates the natural and built heritage of the North American Great Likes from a U.S. perspective, and is most noted as the docking location of a museum Lake freighter, the SS Col. James M Schoonmaker. You can also check out the Toledo Zoo, which began in 1900 as Toledo Zoological Gardens. In 1982 it switched ownership and is now a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and participates in over 30 Species Survival Plans. One of its coolest and most notable exhibits is the hippoquarium, and subsequently documented the first video of a hippo birth.
