As the third largest city in North Carolina, it has a population of over 277 thousand people, and is the intersection of the states three major highways. It was given its name after the American Revolutionary War, named for Major General Nathaneal Greene, the commander of the rebel American forces at the battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781. Even though they lost the battle, the Major’s forces inflicted heavy casualties on the British Army, which caused the British General Cornwallis to withdraw his troops to the coastal base of Wilmington, North Carolina. Today, the area is known to be centered economically around textiles, tobacco, and furniture, and has a variety of retail shopping in the area. While in the area, you should make your way outside to visit the Bog Garden, a nature preserve, botanical garden, and city park that is open daily. It was rehabilitated by local volunteers and now is a beautiful destination, with a 150-foot man made waterfall being installed in 2005. You can also take time to dive back into history by visiting the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, which is inside the building that formerly housed the Woolworth’s that was the site of a non-violent protest in the US civil rights movement initiated by four students from the area. It changed from the initial four, to almost twenty the next day, a major show of support for the movement, which sparked more like it all around. The museum opened fifty years to the day after that first sit-in. Another spot to see in the area is the Blandwood Masnion, which is an historic house museum that was originally built in 1795. It was saved from demolition in 1964 and opened as a museum in 1976.
