Albuquerque is the most populous city in New Mexico with over 557, 169 habitants, and ranks as the 32nd largest city in the United States. It is a high altitude city, situated in the central part of the state, and straddles the Rio Grande. The city was founded in 1706 as the Spanish colonial outpost of Villa de Albuquerque, named in honor of Francisco, Duke of Albuquerque, who was the viceroy of New Spain from 1653 to 1660. It has a very warm climate, since it is in the northern tip of the Chihuhuan Desert, and averages zero moths below freezing. Because of this climate, there are a lot of major events held in the city, such as the Summertime New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair, which is a non-profit for New Mexico artists held annually since 1961. The tradition stays alive with the plethora of artists that live in the town, representing visual arts, music, dance, literary, film, ethnic, and craft organizations, museums, festivals and associations. The Sandia Peak Tramway is also a must-see when visiting Albuquerque, it is an aerial tramway that stretches from the northeast edge of the city to the crestline of the Sandia Mountains, and has the world's third longest single span. For another family friendly outdoor activity, there is also the Albuquerque Biological Park which contains four separate facilities: The Albuquerque Aquarium, The ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden, The Rio Grande Zoo and the Tingley Beach, so there is something for everyone.
