What Are Diamonds Worth?

There are a wide array of factors that affect a diamonds worth. The most important factors are commonly referred to as the 4 C’s:

1. Carat Weight: This refers to how much a diamond weighs in carats, often abbreviated to ct.
2. Cut Grade: This indicates the cut quality and proportions of a diamond with grades that range from Excellent to Poor. Excellent cuts are desirable because they can best reflect light which creates a sparkling appearance. Keep in mind that only round diamonds have cut grades. Fancy cut diamonds, such as ovals and hearts, do not have official cut grades.
3. Colour Grade: This denotes how much colour a diamond has. The less colour a white diamond has the more valuable it is, conversely, the more colour a fancy coloured diamond has, it’s value increases. White diamonds are graded from D-Z, with D as colourless and Z a light yellow. However, fancy coloured diamonds do not have a letter grade, but are graded from Fancy Light to Fancy Vivid to indicate how much colour is displayed.
4. Clarity Grade: This indicates the amount of internal and external marks on a diamond, known as inclusions and blemishes. These grades range from FL to I3, with FL used to denote a flawless diamond and I3 to refer to a visibly flawed diamond. While a diamond may appear flawless, when it is examined under a loupe, imperfections can be seen.

 

Additional Diamond Criteria: In addition to the 4 C’s, there is further criteria to know about your diamond:

• Shape: Diamonds can be cut into an array of shapes with round brilliant leading the way as the most popular cut. Any other cuts, such as emeralds and cushions, are known as fancy cuts. The value of fancy cut diamonds can vary depending on market trends.
• Polish: When diamonds are cut and polished, microscopic abrasions may occur. Polish indicates the smoothness for each facet of a diamond, graded on a scale of Excellent to Poor.
• Symmetry: This indicates how well aligned the facets of the diamond are, including the diamond’s table, crown, girdle and culet. A diamond’s symmetry is graded on a scale from Excellent to Poor.
• Fluorescence: This denotes how much a diamond glows under ultraviolet light, these grades range from None to Very Strong. Typically the more fluorescence a diamond has, the lower its value.
• Treatment: Diamonds can receive artificial treatments to improve its colour or clarity, such as fracture filling or HPHT. Treated diamonds are considered to be less valuable than natural diamonds.
• Certifications: This refers to a diamond grading report, such as a GIA report. A diamond certificate issued by a reputable diamond-grading laboratory is a great resource that will detail all of the characteristics of your stone.

While there are endless online diamond calculators that claim to be able to accurately price your diamond, their results are often wildly inaccurate. This is because calculating the exact value of your diamond is a very difficult process, part art and part science, and requires a trained gemmologist. How To Get A Final Price For My Diamond?

Once you receive your price quote from us and want to get a final offer for your diamond, we provide two convenient methods. You can either schedule an appointment to have your diamond appraised in person or mail-in your diamond. Both options are entirely free and easy.

 

1. Sell Your Diamond In-Person

We offer appointments in:

• Birmingham Every Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5pm.
• London: Offered on a monthly basis, please inquire for our next appointment day.

Our appointments are 30 minutes long, during which you will meet with one of our diamond experts who will evaluate your diamond and offer you a firm price as well as an explication for how your diamond was priced. 2. Send In Your Diamond

You can mail-in your diamond to us from anywhere in the UK for free. After you receive your initial price quote we can provide you with a Royal Mail Special Delivery Pack and instructions on how to safely package and mail your diamond. This mailing service is entirely free and insured, so you can rest assured that your diamond is safe at every step of the process.

When your diamond arrives at our office, it will be opened on camera and evaluated by our GIA trained gemmologists. We will contact you with our final offer which you can accept through bank transfer. If you do not like this offer, we will mail your jewellery back to you, no questions asked.
