History of the Moonwatch

Originally introduced in 1957 as the Speedmaster, this watch was created to be a sports and racing chronograph. The Speedmaster featured a chronograph with a tachymeter scale on the bezel, allowing the user to measure elapsed times and speed. This watch was celebrated for its outstanding precision, endurance and ease of use.

In 1964, astronauts were petitioning for backup timing devices to bring on their missions. Deke Slayton of NASA asked for “a highly durable and accurate chronograph.” The following year, NASA began testing commercial chronographs that could withstand space while retaining its functionality. These chronographs were challenged to endure extreme temperatures, violent shocks, various pressures, vibrations and oscillations. Only Omega’s Speedmaster endured the rigorous testing and was declared “flight qualified for all manned space missions.” When astronaut Buzz Aldrin wore his Speedmaster on the moon in 1969, the Speedmaster gained the name “Moonwatch.”

The Moonwatch is in fact credited with saving the lives of NASA’s astronauts during Apollo 13’s mission in 1970. After a reserve oxygen tank exploded, the electronic timekeeping mechanisms on board were damaged. Commander James Lovell used his Speedmaster to time the ship’s re-entry rockets, allowing the craft to safely land on Earth. Omega was presented with the Silver Snoopy Award, the highest honor awarded by NASA astronauts. These events further cemented the significance of the Moonwatch in NASA’s history.

How much is my vintage Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch worth?

The following factors affect the value of your timepiece:

  • Age of the watch: The age of your Moonwatch plays a part in its value. Collectors are driven to the rich history tied to the vintage Moonwatches from the 60s and 70s which can fetch strong prices.
  • Condition of the watch: If your watch is damaged or has been repaired with components from another brand, the price will be negatively affected. Conversely, if your watch has been regularly serviced and is in great condition, you will have a stronger resale price.
  • Box and papers: While you absolutely can sell your Omega Speedmaster from the 1960’s or 1970’s without box and papers, possessing your Moonwatch’s original box and papers helps to validate its authenticity which in turn increases your final offer. Most collectors prefer to buy vintages timepieces with its original box and papers in good condition. WP Diamonds buys Omega Speedmaster Moonwatches with or without box and papers.
