Sell Vintage Jewelry

Vintage estate jewelry is classified as pieces created within the last 100 years, have an age of 20 years or more and have not been mass-produced. The 1930’s to 1980’s represent the biggest category of items that WP Diamonds normally purchases. Most of the jewelry we purchase is collectible in some manner.

Sell Antique Jewelry

Antique jewelry items were made over 100 years ago. Again the items we purchase have become collectible in a certain way. The key aspects that govern pricing are rarity, age, provenance and design. We see a huge variety of items on a monthly basis. It’s a fascinating area of the jewelry market and we often come in to contact with exquisite examples made in the USA and often in Europe. WP Diamonds are Antique Jewelry buyers operating nationwide.

Details On The Factors That Determine The Value Of Estate Jewelry

Historic period or period significance:

Certain style periods have always had a mass acceptance and thus are actively traded globally. Other periods have come and gone in favor and prices have done the same in those areas. One might believe that with great age come great value, this is often not the case. An expert with the ability to trade far outside of his or her local area will understand geographical upticks in value and be willing to pay more in lieu of that ability. Alone with style significance, provenance especially historic will add to value.

What is hot globally?     Art Deco   &     Edwardian

Intrinsic Value:

An untrained eye might view an Antique or Vintage pieces of jewelry by what is known in the trade as “rocks and metal’. Intrinsic or the raw secondary market value of metal and gemstones is the base of determining price. The premium above the intrinsic value lies in the combination of period style, condition, supply & demand, collectability, rarity provenance, original box & recognized brand or hallmarks

This method provides the lowest value for your heirloom piece of jewelry. We view every items intrinsic value on….

– are the gemstones original to the piece

– are they natural, synthetic or faux

– accepted GIA grading standards & formulas to calculated weights

– internal lab testing as needed

– market & previous auction results & comparisons

– x-ray testing of the metal to verify quality without damaging the item with filing marks & acid testing

Conditions:

The more any item has been gently worn and kept in pristine condition the greater the premium within the confines of the other judgment categories. If an item has been previously restored or a period mounting reset at one time with more modern gemstones the value is greatly depressed.

Problems Areas:

-Broken or heavily worn prongs

-Chipped or missing gemstones

-Use of lead solder in repair / restoration

-Overly polished removing details

-Redesign or remodeling of original period piece

-Bracelets cut down in length

Collectability / Demand:

As previously mentioned certain period styles have continuously been in demand. Good examples of Art Deco or Edwardian jewelry are highly collectible. While Georgian or arts & craft need to find the right buyer or collector to achieve the best price. To confuse the out outsider even more, Victorian jewelry which spanned a number of decades has its sweet spots as well as low point in value. Not a lot of earring in collectible era survived in pairs and now have premiums with those that do. Rings were generally worn & abused on a day to day basis. Those better collectible period pieces in great condition are few and far between. We would pay a premium for the rarity of pairs of earrings or nicer jewelry in great condition. What’s potentially surprising is that pins / brooches in general don’t carry extra value based on fashion. Even though there are plenty of beautiful ones around.

Rarity:

Rarity is a mix of condition of an item and how often the market comes across such an item combined with the frequency we are asked if we have said items for sale.

Rare items by category:

-Earrings

-Vintage engagement rings in excellent condition

-Bracelets measuring 7 inches long (today’s standard)

Rare By Maker:

Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpel, Boucheron, Fouquet, Rene Lalique, Oscar Hayman, Raymond Yard, David Webb
