Morris Helzberg opened the first Helzberg Jewelry Store in 1915 on Minnesota Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. After Helzberg suffered from a stroke a few years later, his 14-year-old son Barnett took over the running of the store. In the 1920s, Barnett used newspaper advertisements to gain notoriety and grow the business to three locations in Missouri. Helzberg Diamonds continued its growth, particularly in regional malls and strip centers, and, by the 1990s, the company consisted of more than 100 stores in 22 states and had launched its e-commerce site. Helzberg was purchased by Berkshire Hathaway in 1995, and, under the guidance of new CEO Beryl Raff, the company has continued to expand and cater to its growing customer base.

The Reality of Selling Helzberg Jewelry

As you embark on the process of selling your Helzberg jewelry, there is some important information to keep in mind about the diamond industry to ensure a satisfying selling process. Throughout the diamond industry, and especially from large retail jewelers such as Helzberg’s, diamonds are marked up heavily at the retail level. Retail jewelers have high operational and marketing costs, and marking up their items is the standard way to cover these costs. Because of these steep mark-ups, you can expect to receive approximately 20-25% of the price you paid at retail for your item.

How Much Is My Helzberg Jewelry Worth?

There are a few factors that have a great impact on the value of your Helzberg jewelry. These factors include:

  1. Diamonds/Gems – The presence of any gems or diamonds on your jewelry will drastically affect its value.
  2. Condition – The condition of any gems or diamonds greatly determines the value of your item. Any chips or abrasions will lower your items’ worth.
  3. The Four C’s – color, clarity, cut, and carat weight—are the biggest determinants of the value of any diamonds on your piece.
  4. Market Demand – If the style and type of piece you are selling is in high demand, it will fetch a greater price on the market.
